Welcome to the Grind: A Coffee Love Letter from Heys Scientific

Hello world — and hello coffee lovers, curious sippers, design nerds, queer caffeine crusaders, and anyone who just wants their cup of coffee to taste a little better.

I’m Mills (they/them), media director and creative lead here at Heys Scientific, and this is the beginning of a delicious, messy, beautifully caffeinated adventure.

But first, let me tell you where we’re coming from.

Heys Scientific began with Oliver, the initial spark behind it all. His idea lit the path, and from there his father, Lloyd our brilliant in-house engineer with a brain wired for precision got to designing and creating. He’s spent years perfecting grinders so precise, your beans will weep with joy. Honestly, the man can explain burr alignment with the passion of a poet and the intensity of a Formula 1 pit crew. You’ll meet him more soon.

Behind Heys is also Lucy, the warm, wise, and quietly powerful co-founder whose belief in human-first design and ethical practice holds us steady. She has a taste for perfectly ground coffee, so together they built a business that’s deeply tasteful as well as personal. No cut corners. No faceless factories. Just beautifully made tools for the sacred ritual of brewing coffee.

I joined the business in 2024, heart full of ambition and oat flat white in hand. I’m a creative by trade, a coffee lover by survival, and someone who’s always looking for the soul inside the systems. I live in the glorious city of London — juggling projects, long days, longer nights, and trying to make each cup of coffee feel like a tiny ritual of joy (or at least one less chaotic moment).

The truth? I don’t know how to make a really good cup of coffee. Like, not really.

So, I have decided to learn. All of it.

From bean to brew, from ethical farming practices to grind mechanics, from packaging design to brew ratios — I’m diving in head first. YouTube tutorials have already taught me what not to do (stay tuned for my Le Creuset disaster story), I’ve just booked my first proper barista course with Ozone Coffee, and a trip to the Host Milano to fuel the obsession further.

But this isn’t just about fancy machinery and flavour notes.

It’s about people. It's about accessibility, sustainability, and celebrating the independent cafes, roasters, and communities that make coffee culture vibrant and inclusive. I’m on a mission to find London’s best hidden gems — the queer-friendly, vegan-welcoming, small-but-mighty spots that serve not just great coffee, but a place to be yourself.
